I have been treated to dessert from Sunset Bakery twice. I also have bought food there maybe a half dozen times in the past dozen years. So I have a sense of the place. Here is praise: every time we eat their goods, my wife remarks they are good, and we ought to patronize them more than we do. She lives up the street. (I live in New York City. I'm dedicated to my marriage and my job. I fly lots. All good.) So she drives past Sunset Bakery probably every single day, maybe more than once. That means, relatively, we have not partaken much of their offerings. The last time was this past weekend. A guest at a dinner party we hosted at our home brought a custard pie. It was excellent. It was as good the next day, and I had saved a little piece as a treat, and my wife ate it, remarking I was stupid to have left that remnant, taking up space in the frig. Likewise, another time, a couple brought multiple purchases for a different evening. My wife commented that they were all tasty, and it was memorable enough that on this more recent occasion she pointed out to me that Sunset seems reliable. They make Chinese dim sum and Chinese American items. Those are fine. This is a hole in the wall take out joint. By that standard, it is excellent.

I've been coming here since the 90's and they have the best baked pork bao in my opinion. I've tried other places but nothing compares. Their cocktail buns are huge and heavenly. The slices of cake are so light and made with the freshest fruit. One piece of advice, call ahead in the morning to order your pork bao or whatever you're getting. They're right on the 43, 44 and N-Judah Muni lines. The first time I went later in the day I did get a lecture about coming so late and expecting bao. It was at that time that I was told to order in the morning. Best. Advice. Ever! Unfortunately, I use a walker or cane now so I have to wait for my sisters to come into town. The ladies at Sunset are so sweet helping me, insisting I sit at a table while I wait for my sister and even offering to carry my goodies to her car. Parking is really bad but there are spots if you're willing to circle the block or walk a bit once you find parking. The best thing is to come with someone so that they can circle the block while you run into the bakery!

Solid Chinese bakery featuring cakes (light whipping cream), baos , tarts, coffee, cookies, bengs, quoks, pies, etc.... Quick, polite service. Their Baked Pork Buns are adequate however I loved their past version which had less sauce, more meat, diced onions, and puffier bread.

I love Chinese cakes .. you know .. the kind that is fluffy and not too sweet. The kind that has fresh fruits on the top and the frosting is pillowy and not too thick. I standard 8' cake is $32 and its cash only. Great customer service. I got a hong kong milk tea while waiting.

*~CASH ONLY~* I grew up on this neighborhood but this is my first time stopping by here. I took a morning stroll with my son to get some quick bites to eat for breakfast and to snack on throughout the day. My favorites have always been cocktail buns from Chinese bakeries like these. They didn't have them on display but she showed me the menu. I also ordered ham and egg buns and a chocolate chip cookie for my baby boy. The cocktail buns did not disappoint! They weren't too sweet like some I've had before. The bread and filling ratio was good and the bread was soft, fluffy, and fresh! The price is good enough to get extra to share. The ham and egg buns were good. We ate it at my house so I added some mayo. lol! Also cheese would be good but these are great to pack for a day out at Golden Gate Park. The lady working there was warm and welcoming and had a big smile to her face. She was very friendly and helpful. The prices here were fair and made me order more to eat for later. The inside of the bakery is small with a couple places to sit but since it's next to the bus stop it's a perfect place to grab and go. This place is awesome and if you come early enough you can find free street parking quite easily. Great pit stop to go to before taking a stroll to the park or to grab a quick bite for breakfast or lunch.
